Experimental Osteoarthritis Induced by Instability of the Knee Joint in Immature Rabbits

Abstract
The ligament and meniscus injuries of children¢¥s knees have gradually increased with traffic accidents and vigorous activities of various popular sports.
It is well known with many experimental reports that osteoarthritis will occur after such injuries in adults. However, there is no report of whether instability of the knee joints of children after, injuries of ligaments develop osteoarthritic changes as in adults.
The purpose of this report is to. investigate whether the instability of the knee joint after ligament injuries in immature rabbits before the stage of epiphyseal closure develop such degenerative changes as those of mature rabbits. Eighty Korean immature domestic rabbits of the. weight from four to five hundred grams, which show the roentgenegraphic demonstration of epiphyseal plate opening were divided into the following four groups; each group comprised twenty rabbits.
Group I as control had only arthrotomy or sham operation.
Group II had the section of medial collateral ligament.
Group III had the section of medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligament.
Group IV had the section of medial collateral and anterior cruciate ligament with the excision of medial meniscus.
Histologic changes of the articular cartilage of the femur, tibia and patella of each group were observed at the time of interval two, four, eight, twelve and sixteen weeks respectively.
The sections were stained with hematoxylin-eosin and toluidine blue.
The results obtained were as follows:
1. In the group II, degenerative changes of the articular cartilage began to appear after twelve weeks in the femur and tibia but they did not appear in the patella until sixteen weeks. Metachromasia for toluidine blue staining method began to decrease after four weeks, and it has reduced moderately until sixteen weeks.
